Management Training Program

Candidates for this program are typically graduating from a 4-year university with a degree in engineering, architecture or construction management.  The program is designed to prepare the employee with a strong foundation in the key disciplines that will help him or her be successful as a construction manager.  The program and timeframes are flexible and depend on the person’s career path, ability to learn and readiness for increased responsibilities.

Year 1: The first year is typically spent in the estimating department, where you would learn about Sauer’s project administration and cost management systems, our suppliers and customers, and the details of general construction and mechanical systems through take-off and pricing.  You will perform tasks in estimating including material take-off, pricing, subcontractor negotiation and bid day close-out.  Within the first year you will have total responsibility from document check-in to final pricing. You may also begin to handle jobsite assignments related to estimating in order to introduce you to field operations.

Years 2-5: As a Project Engineer, typically on one of our construction sites, your responsibilities may include project coordination, processing of submittals, scheduling, purchasing and daily planning.  Working with the field staff and a Project Manager, you would learn project management best practices, gain valuable field construction experience and begin to understand the Sauer management approach, which stresses the importance of planning, organization and minimizing construction costs.

Years 5-10: With the foundation of knowledge and experience gained during the first five years, there would be at least two career paths to consider: estimating/proposal development and project management.  In estimating/proposal development, you could join the department as a senior estimator, with the opportunity of eventually becoming a manager of estimating, design build manager, or marketing manager.  In project management, you could become a Project Manager, and manage projects of increasing size and difficulty.  The eventual goal would be to develop into Contract Manager, Operations Manager or an Area Manager.

As Sauer continues to grow, there are other possible career paths, such as Scheduling, Project Supervision, Safety, Quality Control and Business Development. Your aptitude and skills, as well as personal preferences will help determine the direction you take.
